City, Open Door!
strategies for building and inhabiting the city
1. Open Policy: A rural fishing area just twenty five years ago, Shenzhen today has refashioned itself into a unique metropolis within the Pearl River Delta. Established as a SEZ (special economic zone), Shenzhen was the first to benefit from the revolutionary Open Door Policy issued by the Chinese Government led by Deng Xiaoping.
2. Open City: During the past decade, most Chinese cities have been charged by migrant populations from intercity exchanges and rural regions. Shenzhen demonstrates this phenomenon with its exceptional population of 60,000 migrants, which is 80% of its total population, a large constituent being college graduates and foreign workers.
3. Open Attitude: Shenzhen’s nonstop fluidity of people has left impressions on the city itself. The constant displacement of people imports fluctuating attitudes and ideas, conditioning the city with international dimension.
Entitled City: Open Door, this multi-disciplinary international exhibition seeks to reveal remarkable conditions of the contemporary city to the everyday viewer.
