Viviand:

Viviand:

Viviand:

Viviand:

Viviand:

Overturning traditional Biennale
-------Interviewed with Venice Cyber Biennale organizer

Interviewer: Viviand ( He ying)

V: Hi, I want to ask you some questions on this big event. Now will u please introduce the background and impact which brought by Venice Biennale.

VBES: It was founded in 1895 as the International Exhibition of Art of the City of Venice the first Biennale, which achieved worldwide prestige, included artists from 16 nations. After World War II it became the leading showplace for the international avant-garde. After 1930, Biennale involved more varied art forms like music, movie and dramas, which gradually becomes a great exhibition activity consisting of many art subjects. Some cities in other countries began to hold similar vision art biennale exhibition after WWII. It is said that till now there are more than 300 biennales all over the world, of which more than 30 ones have achieved worldwide prestige, and the Sao Paolo Biennale found in 1951 and Kassel Document 1 found in 1955 could be the successful examples.

V:What great influences did the traditional biennale bring to us?  Is there anything that needs to be improved?

VBES:Independence and critical thinking are the greatest contribution which the traditional Biennale has ever made since it was found. With the rapid development of society, the traditional system is no more able to meet the needs of contemporary culture; what’s more, the independence of critical thinking is gradually losing. Great benefits brought by Biennale are becoming the major reason why more cities pay such attention on this exhibition. This nonprofit social and cultural activity is able to shape an indirect market, namely, by its great international influence, biennale is capable to promote the development of city’s culture, business, tourism and even the growth of GDP. It could be a very good example that Venice Biennale, which used to be nonprofit, now has already made profits. Biennale Exhibition has become a culture industry, a part of consumerism culture.

V: Why do you want to establish this Venice cyber Biennale exhibition? It sounds quiet like the traditional Venice Biennale Exhibition and what‘s the relationship between each other?

VCBS: Venice Cyber Biennale is a new and independent exhibition which has nothing in common with the original VB. They are different both in form and concepts Traditional biennale has some setbacks in terms of organizational structure and geographical dimension which caused insufficient participation in the international arena that greatly diminished the in -depth exploration of artistic trend. However, cyber exhibition not only challenges the physical space and regular thinking of traditional exhibition, but it also offers a chance to explore the new artistic horizon. And that is why we name it Venice Cyber Biennale. We believe this cyber biennale enables more people to take part in this latest development of international visual art, subsequently changing the current system of art exhibition. This will be an important trend for future concept art exhibition.

V: Venice Biennale also has their own website. Will they be the same?

VCBS: The website of VB is just served as a platform for promoting as well as communicating. It’s not a complete cyber exhibition space to any extent

V:  What’s the theme or subject of 1st VCB?

VCBS: The subject is ENDANGERED EARTH. For the human being, Hhhhhfjdaslkfjdsaljfdsathe environment problem is more urgent than ever before

V: What kind of art forms will the cyber exhibition involve?

VCBS: There is no restriction of art works. We welcome any kinds of art forms which could be transmitted by internet

V: How was this activity organized? Which people or institutes will participate?

VCBS: This exhibition is co-organized with nonprofit art institutes, academic community and various intellectual observers from all over the world with insightful observation and independent opinions. We do hope the conservative thinking mode in art circle more or less could be challenged by their insightful perspectives on globalization

V: How many people do you think will visit your website? What influence will it make on Chinese culture circle or even the world?

VCBS: Owing to the convenience brought by internet, the number of visitors is far beyond our expectation since the website official opened to the public.

V: The idea of this Cyber Biennale is very great and apparently welcomed. Is it possible that after 1st Cyber Biennale more independent art institutes will compete to hold this kind of activity?

VCBS: There is no competition actually. We do hope more people could join us and hold this kind of activity, pushing the contemporary art moving forward together.

V: What‘s the next plan after the exhibition?

VCBS:We are going to hold a series of art activities, to promote the idea of harmony and unity between “human and nature, people and the society, people and ego”
