威海路696

                                                                                        ——上海当代艺术状态及开放的工作室

威海路696号，位于陕西南路与茂名南路中间核心商业区一带。从2006年至今在短短不到一年的时间里，来自世界和全国各地以及台湾地区共30余名艺术家迅速聚集于此设立自己的工作室，从架上绘画、雕塑、摄影、影像、观念和装置艺术到平面、时尚和造型设计等，丰富多样的艺术形态让原本废弃的元件五厂厂房不仅得以再利用，威海路696号更迅速成为城市艺术新地标。然而由于各种原因，有传言称这幢历经百年历史的英式风格建筑将于2007年6月拆除，艺术家们即将面临工作室搬迁的现实。

《威海路696——上海当代艺术状态及开放的工作室》是一个当代艺术展，它包括两个部分，一个是在上海多伦现代美术馆举办的《上海当代艺术状态》，30多名艺术家以威海路696号这个集体的身份参加展览，丰富多样的艺术表现方式展示上海当代艺术现状的一个断面。与此同时，在威海路696号，艺术家的工作室统一开放，成为这个主题展览的一种延展和继续。

从一个正统的官方美术馆到开放的艺术家工作室，《威海路696号》打破一贯的展览定式，以更自由活泼平等的方式消除两者之间的严格界限，将两者自然地连接起来。然而比展览本身更为重要的是，30多名艺术家希望借助这个展览表达对威海路696号的热爱之心。在商业繁华的中心城区，一个不以盈利为目的的艺术家聚集区，如果可以合理的规划，对于上海在国际社会中的文化形象提升以及周边商业的带动都会产生不可估量的价值。

威海路696号，是否可以得以保留呢？我们尚且不知道答案是什么。但是如果传言成为了事实，《威海路696——上海当代艺术状态及开放的工作室》将是这段短暂历史的一份记录，假如传言依然只是传言，这个展览，还是一个展览。

Contemporary Art Scene in Shanghai & Open Workshops

Located in the core business district in Shanghai between South Shanxi Road and South Maoming Road, No. 696 Weihai Road has attracted more than 30 artists from around the world to come together and build their own workshops since 2006.  As the former abandoned workshops of the No.5 Accessory Factory, 696 Weihai Road has been renovated into a new art landmark in Shanghai with its dynamic creative atmosphere and diverse art forms including painting, sculpture, photo, video and installation, as well as graphic, fashion and style designing.   However, rumor has it that this British-styled building with a century old history will be knocked down in June 2007. As a result, the resident artists will be forced to move out of their workshops.  

The 696 Weihai Road: Contemporary Art Scene in Shanghai & Open Workshops art exhibition will contain two parts. The first part is the Contemporary Art Scene in Shanghai exhibition at the Shanghai Duolun Museum of Modern Art in which 22 artists will participate under the collective identity 696 Weihai Road.  This will profile the contemporary art scene in Shanghai with various art forms.  The second part includes the opening of the artists’ workshops at the site of 696 Weihai Road and continues with the theme of the exhibition.

Extending from a public art museum to a group of private artistic workshops, 696 Weihai Road breaks the formulas of traditional art shows as the two venues connect to each other in a flexible and equal way, blurring the dividing lines between them. Furthermore, all the participating artists wish to show their devotion to 696 Weihai Road through this exhibition. They believe that with careful and proper planning, this non-profit gathering place for artists, located in the downtown business center, is an important institution to promote Shanghai within the international art world as well as to help develop local businesses nearby.

Will 696 Weihai Road be saved from destruction? There is no answer yet. However, if the rumor turns out to be true, the 696 Weihai Road: Contemporary Art Scene in Shanghai & Open Workshops exhibition will become a documentation of the short and vibrant history of the site.
