AIRPORT: some flying thoughts…
A HUB OF COMMUNICATION/ DISPERSION Built on the small outskirts of a city, ‘airport’ has been designed and developed as a creative infrastructure ever since the invention of airplane. ‘Airport’ had once been the playing-field of the wealth and elite powers. Nowadays, it becomes a public space of arrival and departure. Being the transit and convergence place for people of different nations and for integration of human intelligence, technology, knowledge and information, ‘airport’ is presented as a transportation and communication hub, replacing and displacing history of humanity.
THE LOCAL MEETING WITH THE GLOBAL Throughout the history of ‘space travel’ in various cultures, ‘airport’ has also been perceived as a ‘sky metaphor’ for the way people relates themselves to the global life. ‘Airport’, being the most ‘global’ location of a city, is probably one of the most ‘public’ places, where people of different identities/ ethnicities meet. ‘Airport’ also epitomizes a tension when localization is meeting with globalization. Nowadays, ‘airport’ demarcates the boundary in-between local and global. ‘Airport’, like anywhere, is both a location both local and global.
IDENTIFICATION People identify themselves with a place for its history, heritage, socio-economic life or whatever reasons. ‘Airport’ embodies a ‘public identity’ but what an artist identified is something more or something different. ‘Airport’ is a built spatial structure, where one’s identity is about to elevate/ mutate/ evolve/ shift…. Departure and flying in most airports over the world startles one to leave the local and confront the global. As the extended territory of one’s innermost/ personal/ psychological interest, ‘airport’ is projected and idealized as a dreamland. The outside, opposing, collective world is romanticized, with the neglect of potential uncertainty and hardship of life. Being the final point of national security/ custom control/ health check on the one hand, and the starting point of ultimate freedom and new life on the other, ‘airport’ dramatizes life experiences out of paradoxes.
A VISUAL METAPHOR ‘Airport’ is a visual metaphor; or a name for high style and cool infrastructure. It epitomizes a forward-looking and avant-garde idea. And it is associated to a filmic quality, to which the generic scenes of departure and sorrow, reunion and happiness, waiting and waiting that one often refers. It embodies a diversity of sensation and reaction to time-based flying: a smile of contentment, a gesture of identification or a feel of diaspora, displacement, dislocation, etc. One could perhaps understand from the Japanese adjective ‘空 (empty)’ preceding the character ‘港 (airport)’, i.e. “a place without substance, without specific nationality, or a situation devoid of sweet and lingering memories…”
PROBLEMATICS OF GLOBALIZATION ‘Airport’ helps one to confirm to international standards and collective behaviors in short period of flying. Global collectivism is the basis of world success and it is also the problematic of globalization. The global world of ‘Airport’ was once conceived as a warm-bed for pandemic disease and extreme terrorism. Semantically the spread of informative and communication technology in the global age prepares the ground for human connectivity via trans-national/ inter-continental networking. Metaphorically, this macro system of non-spatial networking can be associated to the micro-structure of virus or biological growth, mutation and interactive infection.
FLYING AWAY WITH REALITY Aircraft, aviation, flying machine or whatever, being the link between local and global, tradition and modernity, is the vehicle visualizing ‘high-level’ traveling and ‘high-style’ living. It amazingly connotes action, speed, efficiency, flexibility and fluid transformation, the given definition of a modern/ global city. It offers both the physical and metaphorical space for one to escape reality and confinement of boundary. It takes one to overcome gravity, i.e. to fly over rocky mountain in order to overview the brave new world from new angles. With airplanes, one also recollects childhood and sweet memory in association with flying paper plane, children toy, online air-jet-game and virtual bungee jumping from helicopter, etc.
A SOCIAL FLYING MACHINE Everyone needs dream. Every city also needs dream. Throughout the ages, flying in high sky is believed as the most exciting dream of everyone and the dream constitutes an integral part in the great evolution of human history. Climbing up the hierarchical social ladder takes time and taking a first-class travel could psychologically step up the progress. Flying high without limitation hinges on a psycho-reversion of social order in terms of class, status, wealth, health…, etc. Collecting luggage from airport conveyor belt also resembles life experience to the cruel twist of fate up-coming...
What indeed constitutes the synthesis of an “airport”? How artists relate themselves to airport with other people differently? How the public/ passengers relate themselves to art in/ for airport? This new trans-national/ cross-spatial/ cross-disciplinary project AIRPORT is set out to convert alternative spaces of the Asian cities (with the starting point of E6 in Shenzhen) to a micro-condition of an alternative airport. The project raises questions on flying, and the way airport corresponds to individual, psychological, non-material aspirations and needs. It interrogates how ‘the local’ is facing with ‘the global’ or how ‘the global’ and ‘the local’ concept is becoming a form of oneness. It is a project exploring the psyche, and the interchange of the subjectivity and the objectivity in the age of fleeting globalization. It also serves to review an aspect of mind and/or memory: the spatial transfer of identity in-between spaces/ or disordered public spaces…I expect this exhibition can forge further discursive debates.
A PLATFORM OF EXCHANGING IDEA In an age of global interchange, the AIRPORT project itself is a platform of exchanging idea and a hub of interconnection among 15 groups of professional from round the globe. Project Airport evokes some flying thoughts, and displaces defined visual forms and preordained boundaries of architecture, installation, painting, video, music, live performance, web art, poster design, poem and etc. It is a collaboration among Asian artists and architects in the SPACE E6, the sole alternative space in Shenzhen, which is noted for its being earliest/ fastest/ exemplary boom of Chinese magnetic modernization and exponential growth of culture over the past twenty years in the trans-China region of Pearl River Delta (P.R.D.). With a touch on Shenzhen’s latest development and experimentation, the exhibition will arrive back home to Hong Kong with new excursions and experimentations.

空港…

YANG Yong (Painter/ Photographer| Shenzhen/ Sichuen) Yang is one of the promising artists in China. His works take a daily-life angle to capture the rising tension between the superfluous glamour of the urban material world of today and the relentlessness uncertainties of pre-industrial environment of the Chinese city he is living in. In close dialogue and collaboration with other Chinese artists, his new work will convert the whole gallery space of E6 to an outdoor space of an international airport.
URBANUS (Architects Xiaodu Liu, Yan Meng and Hui Wang| Shenzhen/ Beijing) Urbanus and other Shenzhen artists considerate the importance of collaboration when experimenting new works in alternative space. They will convert the whole Space E6 to an alternative airport context with renewed meanings.
HAPPENING GROUP (Andy Tam, Vincent Pang, Man Lee, Yip Chun Yin| Hong Kong) "AVIANINFLUENZA/ H5N1/ AIRPORT" This art performance conducted by the Happening Group will be based on globalization, ecology, socio-economic concerns that the world will finally be merged and integrated via the “birth” of technology and information. Yet, the most crucial micro-virus threats, for instance, AIDS, SARS, and H5N1 etc, have started to establish a faster networking as the macro info-techno system. The performer will act, as an anti-gent, to place some invisible marking (i.e. to spread the viruses) to every audience through some normal behaviors, for instance, by shaking hands, hugs, or various gestures etc. Under normal circumstances, the audiences would not be aware that they are “marked” and “infected”. However, the “marked” and “infected” audience would become visible/ noticed by using or scanning via the ultra-violet light. Since all marks are “ultra-violet light” sensitive. In addition, this performance will be multi-media, with a video screening being displayed inside the exhibition hall. The video will show the mutation and growth of microorganism, in parallel with the development of Hong Kong/ Shenzhen city. This concept is also based on Song Dynasty’s Ching Ming Sheung Hoi Toa, which is about ‘city density’ during a festive day. This renowned landscape painting demonstrates the growing urbanization in the Pearl River Delta, as a metaphor of microorganism. This art performance will be environmentally concerned, time-based and situational. It will be a metaphor to ignite people’s thought about the current situation and interactive relationships between human beings, microorganisms, and info-structural developments. The art performance in SPACE E6 will take inspiration from globalization, ecology, socio-economic concerns that the world will finally be merged and integrated via the outburst of technology and information, However, the most important micro-virus threats, for instance, AIDS, SARS, and H5N1, have seemingly established an even faster networking as info-techno system in the air-travel era.
Shuen-git CHOW (architectural sculptures, digital gugin, painting| Paris) “Magic Flying Machine” (2 m x 2 m x 75 cm h) http://www.hosting.zkm.de/MIDIguqin http://www.saatchi-gallery.co.uk/yourgallery/artist_profile/Shuen-git+Chow/13880.html
Artist Shuen-git Chow will exhibit an architectural-sculpture model of the "Magic Flying Machine" with a 24 hr CD of original Digital Guqin music playing from two small speakers and a CD-player. The piece shown is a 1:10 scaled model of a walk-in sculpture. The actual sculpture is 5 meters high. The model will be set in a display stand with a transparent protective hood. The project will be on display to the public at an airport. The full-scale version is a walk-in-space where people could take a moment to relax and listen to an original composition of Digital Gugin music. The show in E6 will be located in a special space designated for quiet moments. For details concerning the Digital Guqin research-creation and its team members, please go to the links enclosed above. The "Magic Flying Machine" is a walk-in sculptures to be installed in urban, public parks as a semi-translucent space, designated for quiet intimate listening moments, for which people can take time to enjoy views, bird songs, and guqin and digital guqin music.
PAK Tozer (Conceptual/ Performance artist| Hong Kong) “WaitingForAFriend (without Appointment)” (42 cm x 28 cm) Pak will create an airport version on this artwork in 10 photos: " WaitingForAFriend (without Appointment)". This time he will wait for a friend in the HK Airport, without appointment. But the problem is he doesn’t know how long he needs to wait for a friend here, maybe 1 day, maybe 10 days? (Detail: http://oneeyeman.blogspot.com/2007/04/17.html)
Jolans FUNG (Photographer/ painter| Hong Kong) "Planewellsky- Trace of Seven Coincidences" Jolans Fung sees photography as an encounter between man and reality. The images of reality are the agents for the understanding of real personal thoughts/ emotional communications. In the capturing of these images that contain different space-time/ decisive moments, Fung combines different pieces of image as a whole. In the SPACE E6, he will use the airplane images to arouse imaginations to interpret this coinciding world from multi-facets. The skyline and imageries of the former Kai Tak Airport will be turned into a collage, which displays that the real capacity of photographs can go beyond margins. Fung likes to explore a person’s sentiments and emotions through his lenses. "By using images to induce imaginations, we, human beings, can once again re-discover our innate senses of touch", says Fung.
HYBRID SPACE LAB (Architect Elizabeth Sikiardi and Frans Vogelaar| Amersterdam) "IDENSITY" (30 min) This video project represents a prototype for the new interdisciplinary field of urban design and planning of ‘Soft Urbanism’. It researched into the transformations of architectural/urban space of the emerging ‘information/communication age, and explored the dynamic interaction of urbanism/ airport design and the space of mass media and communication networks.
REN Qian (Audio Artist| Chongqing) "Echo" The audio work of Ren Qian takes sound records from his air travel from Shenzhen back to hometown Chongqing and from sound track pertaining to the 911 incident. His works examines the complex relationship between art, artist, the general public and general interest. He audio-tapes sound of airport as well as the soft narration among airhostesses. Visitors can experience the power of sound plays in an alternative venue.
WANG Xiao Fei (Installation artist| Hainan) "What the Fuck Do You Want? (Animation 3:17 mins & Installation" (800 × 800 × 500 cm) Wang likes t parody the defined boundaries in-between different nations in the era of globalization and Wang’s paintings usually express the facial feelings of fear, tension and anxiety of buzy passengers awaiting in different airports. And Wang’s aircraft projects usually take the site-specific strategy. In E6, the artist will convert the gallery space to an environment of aircraft. Airplane is our common transport vehicle in modern life, mega-traffic media and economic problems behind the planes are the concerns of artist. "I will be filling the small airplanes everywhere in the gallery, just as dancing or physical training. In the face of the high prices of the true planes, Is it a flirt, or a demonstration?...Plane is the only traffic media to common people, but the competitiveness of the airplane industry has evolved into an economic competition. Airbus, McDonnell, Boeing and the three giants as you know have a very large competitiveness for a long time. How to compete and become the last winner in the numerous mergers? As a familiar transport system, what is behind-the-scene? ...A profound fear can not be hidden," says Wang.
WONG Yui Hin, James (Conceptual artist| Hong Kong) “Traveling Abstraction” Wong’s works are much connected with displacement and dislocation. Wong’s exhibits will be a series of painting on various airports critically selected (i.e. J. F. Kennedy Airport, NYC; Heathrow Airport, London; Abu Dhabi Airport; Charles de Gaulle Airport, Paris; Halifax Airport, Canada, Beijing International Airport), to which the artist during his exhibition tours visited.
LEUNG Meeping (Installation artist| Hong Kong/ California) "Expected Departure" Rendering an installation in 16-20 light boxes showing x-ray imagings of disposable bags around the world, for which the artist collected during her walking/ traveling & wandering around different cites. There is nothing special if one tries to see through the X-ray image of disposable bags that are most often found inside the compartment of jet plane, as the perception of a sickness disposable bags are not only about physical reactions. From one distance to another, unstableness, floating, etc. are “sensations” often within the artist even when there’s no traveling. Somehow, Leung has been trying to settle down in Hong Kong, during which she gets a similar feeling… Diaspora is a state of ‘mental sickness’ and Leung’s work will try to convey a psychological state of ‘homesickness’ or ‘inability’, in association to the physical departure from one’s homeland. The enjoyment of flying as a global life is being confronted with a personal state of phobia.
HOANG Ly (Performance artist/ Poet| Hochiminh) "Flying" Hoang will contribute a thought-provoking poem about “fastening of seat belt’ and the third–world’s dream of flying.
SERVER FOUNDATION (Media Collective| Perth/ Singapore) "Airport of Airports" www.server-foundation.org/aoa
Airport of Airports will be a more research-based and inter-disciplinary. Airports are often seen as nodes which process the mass movement of people and where everything in it is organized around the idea of movement. Server Foundation is interested in the information which airports produced from its processing of people, flights, identity and security. Airport of Airports is a net art piece which based on the study of 10 international airport websites. For this work, Server Foundation will act like “DJs” mixing with the 10 airport websites in order that the audiences will have to surf through the different countries at one time. It will be a kind of surfing from place to place, and site to site.
ZHANG Dali (Designer artist| Shenzhen) "Culture Take-Away" Zhang relates our daily life to the ubiquity of ’bag’, which appears in different forms serving different functions. "There are epsodes pertaining to ’bag’. It is unknown whether culture is as multifarious as ’bag’. Perhaps our head is also packed in a bag one day. Stories however proceeds...," Zhang says. By weaving wooden fibre into a hand-carry case, he uses his case, which is inscribed with illegible characters and texts of Dao De Jing wriiten by Lao Tze, a Chinese philosopher in the Early Qin period, on the surface to explore the problems of language, communication and cultural conflict in the era of a contemporary world.
